Azilal Berber rugs originate from the Azilal region in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco, as well as the surrounding plains that are part of the same area. The term actually refers to a wide variety of different types of Berber rugs, often vibrant and colorful but also simpler wool rugs (similar to Beni Ourain rugs), and you’ll also find Boucherouite rugs. 

The wool rugs are made with a short pile, making them extra easy to care for and particularly suitable for play areas, kitchens, or dining spaces. The principle is similar, but Azilal rugs are crafted with a simple knotting technique. You’ll also find flat-woven kilims and Hiks (wool blankets used as throws, rugs, or wall hangings) in and around this region of the High Atlas. Many cooperatives are based in this area, as well as in numerous other regions.

Locally sourced, high-quality, and hand-processed sheep’s wool forms the foundation of the wool rugs. For the colorful Boucherouite rugs, recycled textiles or yarn are typically used. The region still holds some vintage treasures, though they are becoming increasingly rare.

Especially the vibrant wool rugs and Boucherouite are increasingly finding their way into children’s rooms, but they also make a wonderfully cheerful splash of color in any other space.
