Beni Mrirt Berberteppiche

Origin & Character

Beni Mrirt rugs originate from the Khenifra region in the Middle Atlas Mountains - an area less remote than the traditional Beni Ourain villages. This openness has shaped the rugs of this region: receptive to new influences, denser in construction, more contemporary in expression — while still firmly rooted in traditional techniques.

A Beni Mrirt is immediately recognizable by its feel: soft, substantial, luxurious, and finely brushed. Its higher knot density creates the velvety surface and depth that make it one of the most sought-after Berber rugs of our time.

Why an authentic Beni Mrirt is special

The Beni Mrirt region has always been a place of exchange.
New ideas reach it more easily, patterns continue to evolve, and colors and forms become bolder, while the soul of traditional craftsmanship remains intact.

This is how rugs come to life that unite tradition and modernity:
calm diamond motifs, flowing lines, softly blending shapes and colors, and abstract patterns, often in warm cream tones or rich, earthy hues.

Each rug carries a piece of regional identity and reflects the creativity of the women who knot it by hand.

The Craft - Dense Knots, Soft Depth

A Beni Mrirt rug is knotted especially densely, with a knot count significantly higher than that of many other Berber rugs. This technique requires more time, more wool, more patience  and a deep understanding of structure and consistency.

The result is a rug with a heavier drape, greater density, and a distinctly luxurious weight.
The surface is brushed as a final step, creating a tactile quality that is immediately recognizable.

Our Collaboration - Fair & Rooted

In the Mrirt region as well, we work intentionally with small women-led cooperatives and family-run workshops.

Although the region is more accessible than the remote Beni Ourain villages, fair compensation is just as essential here. Through our direct collaboration, value remains with the people who live this craft - allowing traditional techniques to be preserved, practiced, and passed on.

This is how rugs are created that are not only beautiful, but also socially meaningful.

What defines an authentic Beni Mrirt

  • exceptionally dense knotting

  • velvety-soft feel

  • high-quality pure wool

  • strong, evolving designs inspired by Berber tradition

  • durable, warm, and easy to combine with modern interiors

  • ideal for living spaces, bedrooms, or large open rooms

  • authentic handcraft from the Mrirt region

A Beni Mrirt is not a trend piece, it is a modern classic with deep roots.

Care - naturally uncomplicated

Thanks to their high knot density and the quality of the wool, Beni Mrirt rugs are naturally:

  • dirt-repellent

  • self-cleaning when aired outdoors

  • long-lasting

  • shape-retaining

Like all traditional Berber rugs, they respond well to light, fresh air, and occasional gentle cleaning with pure olive-oil soap.
With every purchase, we include a care guide and you’re always welcome to request it again if needed.
